The agency also accused Wise of <strong>not refunding remittance fees on delayed transactions within the legally required timeframe<\/strong>, resulting in <strong>significant financial harm to consumers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, the CFPB has ordered Wise to:<br>\u2705 Pay <strong>$450,000 in redress<\/strong> to affected customers<br>\u2705 Pay a <strong>$2.025 million civil money penalty<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"\ud83d\udcb0-deceptive-fees-what-wise-allegedly-did-wrong\"><strong>\ud83d\udcb0 Deceptive Fees: What Wise Allegedly Did Wrong<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CFPB&#8217;s investigation found that <strong>Wise misled U.S. consumers in multiple ways<\/strong>, particularly regarding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\ud83d\udd39 <strong>ATM Withdrawal Fees<\/strong> \u2013 The company <strong>advertised inaccurate charges<\/strong>, leading customers to <strong>believe fees were lower than they actually were<\/strong>.<br>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>Exchange Rate Disclosures<\/strong> \u2013 Wise allegedly <strong>failed to properly inform users<\/strong> about exchange rate margins, making it harder for them to compare costs.<br>\ud83d\udd39 <strong>Delayed Remittance Refunds<\/strong> \u2013 Customers whose transfers <strong>did not arrive on time<\/strong> were <strong>not refunded their fees promptly<\/strong>, in violation of <strong>U.S. financial regulations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CFPB Director <strong>Rohit Chopra<\/strong> condemned the company\u2019s actions, stating:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;By deceiving customers, Wise gave itself an unfair advantage over other competitors in the remittances market.
